LA NATURE

Par Arlt
Avec Sing Sing et Eloise Decazes
Realisation Marie Losier et Simon Fravega
Couleur, 16mm, 5min, decembre 2022

souvient du bouleversant The ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye et du si

“Electric Storm” celebrates the beginning of electronic music marked by the 100th birthday of the Theremin - Dorit Chrysler envisioned its setting in a “Cathedral of Science” namely at CERN, the international Nuclear Research Center at Geneva. Teaming up with Film Maker Marie Losier, “Electric Storm” was filmed (by Marie on 16mm) at the CMS collider cave of CERN in mid march.

It has a particular poignancy in that it while the shoot had been planned for years, the weekend that had been chosen turned out to be the weekend of the great world shutdown and everybody’s flights and trains (NY, Paris, Vienna) were being cancelled and they didn’t know if they would be stuck in Geneva far from their families, and yet they continued working solidly nevertheless.

Music composed and sung by Felix Kubin
With Sophie Cavoulacos, Tony Torn, Juliana & M.J Francis Kelly, Oleg and Dima Dubson, Guy Greenberg, Dorit & Eik Chrysler, Marianne Shaneen, Victoria Keddie, M.V Carbon, Bradley Eros, Sam, Angie & Anna Diiorio, Margarita Jimeno, Joel Schlemowitz, Rachael & Gabriel Guma Rene Abernathy, Felix Kubin, Amelie Garin Davet, Steve Dalachinsky.

When I returned to NYC for a retrospective of my films at MoMA, I was also invited to PS1 to create a performance for the SUNDAY SESSION with my dear friend Felix Kubin; the composer and singer from Hamburg, who was the subject of my last film Felix in Wonderland.
I do not perform so I proposed to PS1 to film a music video as a performance the way I usually do with all my dearest NY friends, on 16mm and this time with an audience watching us making the film live!
Felix composed a song for this event, Download Yourself.
The performance, film shoot, was a beautiful celebration of friendship, creativity, craziness and film making and NYC!.

USA, 2007/2018, 16 mm, black & white, color, sound, 5 min 47 s

Film portrait of my mentor, the painter Peter Hristoff, while teaching drawing at SVA, in NYC.
Peter teaches painting the way a filmmaker or theater director directs his actors and the class is his playground, his stage. The students are around the stage filled with models in hand made costumes, who dance, pause, create emotions, stage scenes that Peter invent. Peter’s whimsical world, and process of creation is what inspired me to become a painter, a filmmaker and embrace life with my playground.

This intimate portrait depicts the moving and rebellious soul of groundbreaking visual artist and pioneer of minimalist electronic rock, Alan Vega, vocalist and composer for 1970s and 80s punk/post punk duo Suicide. Alan plays with the camera while loving, fighting and living with his family—Liz Lamere, his wife and collaborator, and their prodigal son Dante, young replica of Alan. Traces of joy, eccentricity, illumination, the rock-n-roll Alan Vega is still very alive, funny and rebellious!

The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye (2011)

Shot on 16mm, Color, 72 mn. With Genesis P-Orridge, Lady Jaye, Psychic TV...Produced by Marie Losier

An intimate, affecting portrait of the life and work of groundbreaking performance artist and music pioneer Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV) and his other half and collaborator, Lady Jaye, centered around the daring sexual transformations the pair underwent for their “Pandrogyne” project.

P-Orridge is revealed as an innate artist who inflects and illuminates every aspect of existence, high and low, exalted and humble, with a singular sensibility; Losier’s film captures the poignant paradoxes, the ecstasies and burdens, of the transformation of life into art.

With Richard Foreman, Juliana Francis, Tom Ryder Smith and JaySmith.

“The theater is about sex.” At least according to Richard Foreman, the father of the Ontological Hysterical Theater. The Ontological Cowboy documents Foreman’s invocation of the “manifest destiny” of the avant-garde theater, King Cowboy Rufus strolling down off San Juan Hill with a sigh, waving his handkerchief. Foreman plays himself, and the cast pantomimes his preoccupations. If “the cast and crew suffer alike,” it’s all for a good cause: the violent rebirth of the American theater, with Foreman as its midwife.

You always have to be careful, you always have to have the shower backward in order to see the water, which means you better watch out, or you might electrify or electrocute your stars. You know what I mean, by having the light falling into the tub” -GK

This is a dream-portrait of George Kuchar, traveling through snow confetti, strobe flashes and artificial wind as he describes his weather diaries. And then George joins Janet Leigh in the shower. Wearing a red raincoat and a shower cap, reading comic books and blowing bubbles, he laughingly describes his bathing rituals and the making of his film, Hold Me While I’m Naked.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (2002)

Shot on video, b&w 8 min. With Marie Losier

The story of Jean of Arc is one of the most frequently told tales in cinema’s hundred plus year history. This brand new version is a post-mortem/ post- modern collaboration between the Great Dane Carl Dreyer and Marie Losier, who inserts herself into the 1928 film as God’s greatest lover and France’s most cherished martyr. A funny tragedy.

The Touch Retouched (2002)

The Touch Retouched (2002)

Video, color, 5 min. With Marie Losier, Max Von Sydow, Bibi Anderson

“Do you have any photos of your wife in the nude” “Oh, I’m sorry, David to disappoint you. You will have to content yourself with my orchid”

In 1971, Ingmar Bergman made his only American film, The Touch, starring ensemble regulars Max Von Sydow and Bibi Anderson, along with early 70s everyman Elliott Gould. In 2001, Marie Losier decided to recast herself in Gould’s role, breathing new life into Bergman’s most awkward, ill-conceived and dubious filmic endeavor.
